According to a recently released
survey of more than 5,000 MCPS
teachers, nearly 45% of MCPS
teachers find that their class sizes
are not “manageable.” Around
50% of MCPS teachers either
“somewhat agreed” or “strongly
agreed” that their class sizes were
reasonable. Superintendent Jerry
Weast has stated that MCPS will
add one student to each class if
the county does not fully fund the
proposed school budget. The sur-
vey was conducted anonymously
and gathered teachers’ opinions
on their school environment and
on what the county could do to
improve public education. |

Police officers create a sense
of security and safety wherever
they go, enforcing the law and
punishing those who break it. In
response to the aftermath of the
Columbine shooting in 1999 as
well as tightened security nation-
wide following the September 11
aacks, police departments have
been assigning officers to school
districts. The presence of police is
especially important in middle and
high schools where issues such as
gang violence necessitate their at-
tention. |

As Americans, we pride
ourselves on protecting the
freedom of our citizens, especially
our freedom of speech. According
to the Constitution and affirmed
by the U.S. Supreme Court,
we have the freedom to speak
our mind, even by burning an
American flag. And while some
people think of kids as our future
citizens, in reality kids are full
citizens. Therefore, as citizens,
students have the freedom of
speech too, including symbolic
speech. |

“Look Ma! I got a 4.8 GPA!”.
While it seems impossible, some
elite students can boast of such an
achievement. MCPS policy awards
an extra weighted GPA point to
students who take Honors, AP,
or IB classes, and does not dif-
ferentiate between them. In recent
years, the rise of more advanced
programs has hurt honors classes,
leaving them at a level that was
previously deemed on-level, but
still weighted. In fact, even 10th
grade Honors Health is weighted.
With so many different classes be-
ing simplified down to one bonus
point, what has the relevance of
weighted GPA become? If you ask
admissions officers of nearby uni-
versities, virtually nothing. |
