According to a recently released survey of more than 5,000 MCPS teachers, nearly 45% of MCPS teachers find that their class sizes are not “manageable.” Around 50% of MCPS teachers either “somewhat agreed” or “strongly agreed” that their class sizes were reasonable. Superintendent Jerry Weast has stated that MCPS will add one student to each class if the county does not fully fund the proposed school budget. The sur- vey was conducted anonymously and gathered teachers’ opinions on their school environment and on what the county could do to improve public education.

Police officers create a sense of security and safety wherever they go, enforcing the law and punishing those who break it. In response to the aftermath of the Columbine shooting in 1999 as well as tightened security nation- wide following the September 11 a�acks, police departments have been assigning officers to school districts. The presence of police is especially important in middle and high schools where issues such as gang violence necessitate their at- tention.

As Americans, we pride ourselves on protecting the freedom of our citizens, especially our freedom of speech. According to the Constitution and affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court, we have the freedom to speak our mind, even by burning an American flag. And while some people think of kids as our future citizens, in reality kids are full citizens. Therefore, as citizens, students have the freedom of speech too, including symbolic speech.

 “Look Ma! I got a 4.8 GPA!”. While it seems impossible, some elite students can boast of such an achievement. MCPS policy awards an extra weighted GPA point to students who take Honors, AP, or IB classes, and does not dif- ferentiate between them. In recent years, the rise of more advanced programs has hurt honors classes, leaving them at a level that was previously deemed on-level, but still weighted. In fact, even 10th grade Honors Health is weighted. With so many different classes be- ing simplified down to one bonus point, what has the relevance of weighted GPA become? If you ask admissions officers of nearby uni- versities, virtually nothing.
