Q: Why were you motivated to run for Rockville City Council? A: When I needed my City Council to intervene in a local issue involving the Montgomery College Fence in the College Gardens neighborhood, I was met with a lethargic body that almost blatantly refused to get involved, and when the SGA tried to get our crosswalks painted, they did not agree without two years of prodding. The Rockville City Council needs to be more proactive, and that notion is what first got me thinking about running for City Council. Q: As a current high school student, what sort of challenges have you had to overcome? A: Being a full time student, campaigning, and balancing a whole host of other activities has been a challenge, but in the end it’s been a lesson in time management. One of the biggest challenges has been raising funds but in the end, I’m proud of the grass roots campaign we’re running. Out of the 10 candidates running for council, we’ve spent the least money, and we’re still getting the word out due to the hard work of all our volunteers. Q: How have you been communicating your attitude and abilities? Do you think adult residents are taking you seriously? A: I have been meeting people personally, dropping flyers, making calls, and attending citizen forums at Rockville City Council and events across Rockville, all of which have shown that I am committed to bettering Rockville. Brigitta Mullican and Drew Powell, both former candidates who have garnered considerable support in their previous runs, have endorsed me because they believe in my vision. Q: What do you think are the most worthwhile experiences you have had throughout your campaign? A: I have met with and gained higher levels of understanding of small business owners, seniors, and many other residents. As I walk their neighborhoods, and hearing their concerns and thinking how I can help them, and help all of Rockville be the best it can be. They’re invested in Rockville, and it’s time that our City Council members are too. Q: Do you think you have a real chance of being elected? A: Yes. We might not be raising tens of thousands of dollars or hiring political operatives from Washington, but we’re running a truly grassroots campaign. All of my campaign staff is unpaid and they all generously contribute their time because they believe Rockville deserves better. Obviously, I have a lot of disadvantages, including less free time, fewer personal resources, fewer connections, and less funding than many of my opponents. People are inclined to discount me because of my youth, however at the same time, I hope the energy and passion I have for bettering Rockville can bring new voters to the polls. Every registered voter is allowed to vote for 4 council members, which is a huge help for any newcomer. Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with us? A: I really appreciate the RM community’s support. Please tell your parents about my candidacy and help out in any way you can - distributing flyers, hanging a yard sign, putting a bumper sticker on your car, AND VOTING! Check out my website http://www.waleed4council.org for more info. And remember, Vote Waleed Ovase for Rockville City Council on November 3rd! |
